Fabrizio Romano reports that Juventus has taken their first concrete steps toward bringing Federico Chiesa back to Turin, opening initial contacts with Liverpool to explore the conditions of a potential January move. The Italian winger has already given his approval to the idea of a second spell in black and white, a key factor that has encouraged the Bianconeri to act.
Juventus directors have made their interest known to Liverpool, informally enquiring whether the Premier League club would be open to negotiations in the latter part of the January transfer window. At present, however, the Reds’ situation complicates any immediate progress. New head coach Arne Slot is currently without Mohamed Salah, who is away at the Africa Cup of Nations, while injuries, including Isak, have reduced attacking depth. As a result, Liverpool are unwilling to weaken their forward line for now.
That position may soften in the coming weeks. With Salah expected to return and Liverpool’s injury situation likely to improve, the club could reconsider Chiesa’s status toward the end of January, potentially opening the door to talks.
Chiesa joined Liverpool in the summer of 2024 for €12 million plus €3 million in bonuses, but his time in England has failed to live up to expectations. The 26-year-old has struggled for continuity and minutes, registering 4 goals and 5 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions over the past year and a half. While his quality remains undisputed, he has yet to truly establish himself in the Premier League.
Juventus see Chiesa as a market opportunity, a player they know well, available under favourable conditions, and motivated to relaunch his career. A return to Turin would also allow him to work again under Luciano Spalletti, who previously praised him as “Italy’s Sinner” during his time in charge of the national team.
From a transfer standpoint, the operation is currently being discussed as a loan move, a formula that would suit all parties: Juventus would reinforce their attacking options without committing to a major outlay, Liverpool would retain flexibility, and Chiesa would gain the playing time he needs to push for a place in Italy’s squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The coming weeks will be decisive, but the Chiesa-Juventus reunion is no longer just speculation, the first moves have already been made.
