Former Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli, in an exclusive interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, shared his thoughts on Juventus’ recent performances and the upcoming Champions League clash with Manchester City.
Barzagli acknowledged the natural fluctuations that come with a total squad overhaul like the one Juventus has undergone.
“The highs and lows are normal when you go through a complete revolution like Juventus did. And the lows, at least in the league, are draws, not defeats,” he said.
“There’s a significant difference; maintaining an unbeaten run in Serie A is a crucial sign. Thiago’s team, in terms of characteristics, is orderly and solid.”
When asked about the potential need for a new defender in January, Barzagli was pragmatic.
“In January, it’s hard; you need to hit the jackpot with an impact signing because there’s little time. It’s better to get someone who knows the league or a high-profile player from Europe,” he said.
“Mid-season, you either improve or it’s not worth it. I don’t know Juventus’ budget, but of the names I’ve heard, Skriniar seems to be the safest bet.”
Regarding the task of marking Manchester City’s formidable striker Erling Haaland, Barzagli offered his tactical advice.
“You need great attention inside the box, where he is terrifying. Haaland combines size, athleticism, with significant movements and acrobatic skill. You have to stick close to him,” he said.
“Acerbi, in recent duels against Inter in matches with City, always kept him under pressure. But it must be a team effort; the entire Juventus defense needs to be close to him.”
Barzagli also commented on the young talent Kenan Yildiz and the recent signing Teun Koopmeiners.
“Yildiz, in terms of pure talent, would have fit into our successful Juventus teams. The pressure on Koopmeiners is inevitable after the summer investment, but let’s not forget he arrived late, got injured, and Juventus is a world apart; I’ve seen many like him,” he said.
Barzagli’s insights provide a seasoned perspective on Juventus’ current squad dynamics and the challenges they face against top European competition. His advice on managing both new and established players could prove pivotal as Juventus looks to navigate through the season’s remaining challenges.
