Former Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini has reflected on the key moments of his iconic career in an interview on The Excellent Leadership Podcast, naming Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri as the two most influential managers he worked with.

Chiellini, who recently returned to the club in an executive role as Director of Football Strategy, spent 17 unforgettable years wearing the black and white jersey.

Following a brief but successful stint with LAFC in the United States, where he won the MLS Cup, the 40-year-old has embraced a new chapter off the pitch at Juventus, working under General Director Damien Comolli.

Chiellini notably remained at the club during its darkest chapter in 2006, when Juventus were relegated to Serie B in the aftermath of the Calciopoli scandal. However, he modestly deflected praise for his loyalty at the time.

“At the time I was 22, I had just arrived at Juventus,” said Chiellini. “It was a time for me to take on more responsibility and learn from legends like Buffon, Del Piero, Trezeguet, Nedved, and Camoranesi players who had already won the World Cup and still chose to stay.”

He credited this period as crucial for his development, both as a starter and as a future leader.

Chiellini also highlighted the contrast between his leadership approach and that of former teammate Gianluigi Buffon.

“Gigi had a charisma that could touch your soul. He knew how to say the right words at the right time to shift the course of a game. I don’t think I had that gift. I tried to lead in a different way.”

Chiellini didn’t hesitate when asked to name the managers who shaped his career the most.

“The best coaches I had were Antonio Conte and Max Allegri,” he stated. “Conte revolutionized my understanding of football.

He focused on playing from the back and becoming a complete player. Allegri, on the other hand, gave us freedom and responsibility, which were equally important to my growth.”
