Juventus and Roma consider surprise swap deal
Juventus and AS Roma are reportedly exploring the possibility of a swap deal involving midfielders Weston McKennie and Bryan Cristante.
This potential exchange aligns with the sporting strategies of both clubs. Juventus, under new coach Igor Tudor, is seeking to reinforce its midfield with at least two new additions, ideally boosting the Italian core of the squad.
Cristante, known for his tactical versatility and leadership, fits that vision well. His contract runs until 2027, making him a manageable long-term investment.
For Roma, acquiring McKennie could fulfill both sporting and symbolic interests. The American midfielder shares a cultural link with the club’s owners, the Friedkin Group, who are also from Texas.
This connection, combined with McKennie’s Premier League and Serie A experience, makes him a compelling option for the Giallorossi.
Juventus have reportedly halted renewal talks with McKennie, whose contract expires in 2026.
While it’s possible the club could allow him to see out his deal, sporting director Damien Comolli is keen to avoid losing him on a free transfer prompting active exploration of alternatives, including this swap.
Cristante’s arrival would bolster Juventus’ strategy of reinforcing its Italian identity a trait historically associated with the club’s domestic and European success.
He would join fellow Italian players like Manuel Locatelli, Federico Gatti, Andrea Cambiaso, Michele Di Gregorio, Mattia Perin, Carlo Pinsoglio, and Giuseppe Savona.
Although Roma reportedly considered including Lorenzo Pellegrini in a potential swap for McKennie, Juventus remain more interested in Cristante.
Both Comolli and Tudor prefer Cristante’s technical and tactical profile, which they see as a better fit for the club’s evolving midfield.
As the summer transfer window progresses, this swap deal could gain momentum—offering both clubs a solution that balances footballing needs with strategic goals.
