Juventus had been eyeing Renato Veiga for years

Renato Veiga’s arrival at Juventus was not a last-minute decision. According to journalist Romeo Agresti (via Ilbianconero), the Portuguese defender, born in 2003, had been on Juventus’ radar long before his move from Sporting Lisbon to Chelsea.

The club’s scouting team, led by Matteo Tognozzi who previously discovered young Next Gen talents like Dean Huijsen had closely monitored Veiga but initially hesitated to make a move. One of the main concerns was his undefined role on the pitch, as he appeared to be still searching for his ideal position.

At Chelsea, Veiga primarily played as a deep-lying midfielder in front of the defense and as a left-back, further highlighting his tactical versatility but also his lack of specialization in a single role.

Juventus, however, continued to track his development. Under sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli, the club took previous scouting reports into account and ultimately decided to bring him in, especially after the injury to Pierre Kalulu.

The decision to deploy Veiga as a central defender became evident during his debut match against Empoli, where he stepped in to fill the void left by Kalulu.

Juventus sees potential in the young Portuguese talent, and although he arrived on a paid loan with no immediate obligation to buy, the club has not ruled out the possibility of making his stay permanent beyond the current season.
