Newcastle United are preparing a possible January move for Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli as manager Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his midfield options.

According to football writer Mark Brus in his Daily Briefing, Newcastle have been closely monitoring the Italian international and could make a formal approach in the winter transfer window.

Brus wrote: “Eddie Howe and his team are looking for a new midfielder, and Locatelli has caught their attention. Newcastle are focused on experienced talent that can add quality and balance to the squad.”

Locatelli, who is under contract with Juventus, is valued at around €40 million (£35m). He is seen as a player capable of linking defense and attack, while also bringing control in tight matches.

Newcastle already have strong midfielders in Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Joelinton, but the demands of Champions League football and a crowded fixture list mean the squad needs more depth.

Locatelli, 25, has been compared to Bruno in terms of vision and ball control, and his Italian roots mean he shares strong chemistry potential with Tonali. His mix of defensive discipline and playmaking could make him an ideal addition to Howe’s system.

For now, no official bid has been made, but Newcastle are expected to consider him seriously in January.
