PSV 3-1 Juventus: Match report and player ratings

Juventus traveled to the Netherlands to take on PSV in the second leg of the Champions League. With a 2-1 lead in the first leg, the Bianconeri just needed a draw or win to move on to the next round.

The Old Lady continued their form in the first half of the match, squashing any attacking chances from the Dutch side and creating a few chances themselves. However, it was a different story in the second half.

PSV opened the score eight minutes into the second half, leveling the aggregate score. Timothy Weah responded 10 minutes later with a thunderous strike to retake the lead on aggregate, hoping to hold the lead. But PSV scored soon after due to some woeful defending and the score would remain heading into extra time.

Since 2019, Juventus have been knocked out of Europe by smaller clubs and against PSV would be no different. The Dutch club scored eight minutes into extra time and would hold the lead until the final whistle. Juventus lose 4-3 on aggregate score and are knocked out of the Champions League.

Juventus player ratings:
Michele Di Gregorio – 6: The only player doing everything he could to give Juventus a chance. Crucial stops and saves, but luck was not in his favor with PSV’s winning goal in extra time.

Lloyd Kelly – 3: Solid first half from the Englishman, but left that all behind after.

Renato Veiga -N/A: Injured 10 minutes into the game and had to be subbed out. Hoping for a quick recovery, but can’t help but think about the difference he would’ve made in this game.

Federico Gatti – 3: Grinta is not enough. His partnership with Kelly wasn’t there and oftentimes left PSV with too much space in the back.

Timothy Weah – 6: Weah saw McKennie’s goal last week and said I can do that too. He put in a great shift at right back and scored the only Juventus goal, but it wasn’t enough.

Teun Koopmeiners – 4: Added little to the midfield and couldn’t get into the game. The Dutchman continues to have a forgettable season and needs to start making an impact soon before all hope is lost.

Manuel Locatelli – 5: Solid first half from the captain. Maintained control of the midfield but was subbed off after PSV’s second goal of the game.

Nico Gonzalez – 1: Did absolutely nothing. Embarrassing performance and needs to be on the bench moving forward.

Weston McKennie – 5: Not a bad shift from the American. Almost gave an assist to Kolo Muani. Did what he could but it wasn’t enough.

Francisco Conceição – 4: A tale of being too selfish. Could’ve easily won the game if he passed the ball to Kolo Muani multiple times in the game, but held the ball too long or just didn’t pass at all. Worst game in a Juve shirt this season.

Randal Kolo Muani – 5: Quiet game for the Frenchman. Almost scored a couple of goals in the first half from a Koopmeiners pass but a PSV defender got a touch on the ball to stop any chance and a good pass from McKennie that was shot right at the keeper.

Substitutes:

Andrea Cambiaso – 4: Did his job in the first half after coming on for the injured Veiga, but failed to make an impression the rest of the game. Thiago Motta moved him into midfield in the second half but the Italian made next to no impact.

Nicolò Savona – 3: The bad games continue for the young defender. Was beaten by his man every time and in the dire moments of the game, he seemed too scared and stuck in his head to do anything. Also, was lucky not to get a red card for his challenge on Luuk de Jong.

Kephrem Thuram – 5: Tried his best to get something going for Juventus. In the final half of extra time, the Frenchman ran with the ball into the box but shanked the kick in front of the goal.

Kenan Yıldız – 5: Was forced to play wide to accommodate Nico Gonzalez at the 10 spot after coming on.

Dusan Vlahović – 4: One good chance that hit the post. Other than that, didn’t impact the game.

Samuel Mbangula – 3: Much like last week when the Belgian came on against PSV, he had another horrid showing. Mbangula had one good ball into the box that almost got him an assist but was wasteful with the ball overall.

Coach:

Thiago Motta – 0: Kept Nico Gonzalez on all game. Second-guessed his subs after PSV’s first goal. Destroyed all confidence in the fanbase after a good run of games. His response for the rest of the season will be telling
