Thiago Motta reflects on PSV defeat

Following Juventus’ defeat against PSV, head coach Thiago Motta shared his thoughts with Sky Sport (via Ilbianconero), addressing key moments of the match and defending his decision making regarding substitutions.

Motta acknowledged that his team faced significant challenges, particularly in the latter half of the game. “We struggled in the second half, but we managed to score a crucial equalizer at a critical moment.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t hold onto it,” he stated. “In the first half, we played well and created opportunities, including hitting the post. We knew PSV was a high-quality team, and at times, we suffered a lot.”

The Juventus coach expressed his disappointment over the goals conceded. “We can’t be happy about the two goals we allowed. The second goal came when we had possession but lost the ball on a switch of play, leading to a counterattack.

The third goal resulted from a foul and another predictable play where Bakayoko controlled the ball inside our box. If we want to compete at this level, we need to handle these situations better. Throughout the match, we were unable to maintain control and get the result in our favor.”

Addressing the substitutions, Motta explained that some changes were necessary due to fitness concerns. “Renato’s substitution was forced, and the same applied to Koopmeiners, who had a fever yesterday and this morning.

He requested to come off. Cambiaso was brought in as he was the only viable option along with Thuram. However, Cambiaso also asked to be substituted as he was not feeling well after being sidelined for a long time.”

Motta dismissed criticism regarding the timing of his substitutions. “I don’t think I delayed making changes. Before PSV’s first goal, I was already planning to introduce fresh energy.

Then we equalized, and at times, you have to calm the game down. After that, I decided to make the changes to inject more energy into the team. I believe the substitutions were made at the right moment.”
