Juventus’ visit to the White House ahead of their Club World Cup opener took an unexpected turn when U.S. President Donald Trump asked the players a pointed question about transgender athletes.
The Italian giants, in Washington for their clash against UAE side Al Ain, made a ceremonial stop at the White House, accompanied by U.S. internationals Weston McKennie and Timothy Weah, along with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
During the visit, President Trump asked the Juventus squad, “Could a woman make your team, fellas?” a question that was met with silence.
He repeated the question before Juventus general manager Damien Comolli stepped in, attempting to defuse the moment.
“We have a very good women’s team,” Comolli responded, referencing Juventus Women, the reigning Serie A Femminile champions.
“But they should be playing with women,” Trump replied, brushing off the answer and leaving many in the room visibly uncomfortable.
The awkward exchange came amid heightened political tension, especially after Trump signed an executive order in February banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports a decision that has sparked national debate and protest.
Despite the off-field drama, Juventus delivered a dominant performance later that night, thrashing Al Ain 5–0 in their Club World Cup opener at Audi Field.
The victory sends a strong signal of the team’s intent in the competition, with standout performances from McKennie and Federico Chiesa.
The White House visit, however, will be remembered just as much for the tense exchange with Trump as for the team’s commanding win.
