Weston Mckennie set to extend contract.
Weston Mckennie is set to sign a contract extension to stay at Juventus. This is after it looked likely that he would leave as it was deemed that Thiago Motta didn’t see the American as a part of his project. Now it has changed between the coach and player so he will now stay.
The contract will not provide him with a pay boost. Instead, it will just add another year on to his deal meaning it will run until 2026. As well it will include an option that will run for an added year if Mckennie wants to stay in Turin.
This could be because not many clubs have been a fan of Mckennie. He was linked to Aston Villa, but nothing happened because of wage issues. Villa would be one of the rare teams that could suit Mckennie as he wants to play Champions League football.
A move back home to join the MLS was floated but nothing ever happened. This could be because Mckennie as mentioned before wants to play European football. A few other teams were mentioned but nothing ever eventuated.
Mckennie could have decided to stay because of what he has seen Motta doing. He could be a big fan of him and what he offers in a strong attacking manor of football. This project could have been interesting to Mckennie because of the fast-paced ball movement.
But if he does want to come back and play consistent games, he needs to make a few changes. He needs to be more confident on the ball, with a better a technical ability. He showed class last season on the defensive side of the ball consistently making strong efforts.
However, this offseason he has had something change. He was overweight during this year’s Copa America and struggled for form as the United States got knocked out of the group behind Panama and Urugay. There has been no proof that this has changed and could cost him game time especially with Nicolo Fagioli back from his gambling suspension.
