Why Juventus fans called Max Allegri’s name at Allianz Stadium

In the aftermath of Juventus’ crushing 4-0 defeat against Atalanta, a section of fans at the Allianz Stadium voiced their frustration in an unexpected way by chanting the name of former manager Massimiliano Allegri.

Sunday’s match saw Juventus endure their worst home loss since 1967, with Atalanta dominating from start to finish. Thiago Motta’s squad appeared disoriented and lacked inspiration, struggling to contain their opponents.

Goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio managed to prevent an even more lopsided scoreline with several crucial saves in the first half.

When Ademola Lookman netted Atalanta’s fourth goal, the frustration among Juventus supporters reached its peak. In response, members of the Curva Sud ultras left the stadium before the final whistle a striking sign of discontent.

According to IlBianconero, the chants in favor of Allegri came from a section of the crowd that had previously supported him when he was dismissed last season.

While some interpreted this as nostalgia for past successes, others saw it as a pointed criticism of the club’s leadership, particularly Football Director Cristiano Giuntoli, who played a key role in Allegri’s exit.

Allegri was dismissed following a controversial outburst after Juventus’ Coppa Italia final victory against Atalanta in May 2024.

However, many believed his departure was already in motion before the incident, with the club’s decision to replace him with Thiago Motta effectively sealing his fate.

Allegri’s time in Turin was marked by two distinct eras. His first tenure, spanning from 2014 to 2019, was filled with triumphs, including five Serie A titles, four Coppa Italia trophies, and two Champions League final appearances.

However, his second spell from 2021 to 2024 was less successful, yielding only one major trophy before he was ultimately dismissed.

With Juventus now struggling under Motta, some fans appear to be questioning whether Allegri’s departure was the right move.

As the season progresses, the pressure continues to mount on the club’s leadership to justify their decision and find a way forward.
