Juventus are eyeing a move for experienced Swiss fullback Silvan Widmer after missing out on Flamengo’s Wesley, who is now set to join AS Roma.
The Bianconeri, aiming to strengthen their squad across multiple positions this summer, had initially targeted 21-year-old Wesley as a long-term solution at wingback. However, the youngster has reportedly chosen to join Gian Piero Gasperini’s project in the capital.
With Wesley no longer an option, Juventus have turned their attention to Mainz captain Silvan Widmer, The 32-year-old Switzerland international has emerged as a top candidate on the shortlist prepared by club director Damien Comolli.
While Widmer may not be the flashy signing fans hoped for, his experience and familiarity with Serie A make him a practical option.
Despite never playing for a top-tier European club or winning major trophies, Widmer offers stability, leadership, and tactical awareness.
The Swiss defender previously spent five seasons in Italy with Udinese, making 131 Serie A appearances from 2013 to 2018 and contributing five goals and 16 assists.
He later returned to Switzerland to play for FC Basel before joining Bundesliga side Mainz in 2021, where he currently serves as captain.
With his contract set to expire in 2026, Transfermarkt values him at around €1.2 million—making him a low-cost, low-risk signing for Juventus.
Widmer could be the second addition to Juventus’ summer recruitment drive, following the confirmed signing of Canadian forward Jonathan David. The club is expected to continue pursuing reinforcements across defense and midfield before the season begins.
While Widmer’s signing wouldn’t be one to excite the headlines, his arrival would bring a reliable and experienced option for new manager Igor Tudor to consider, especially in a season where squad depth will be crucial.
